Introduction:

Goldeneye is possibly one of the best games based on a popular movie franchise. Rare did an excellent job in incorporating new elements into the tried and true first-person genre. The result is a great game with mission objectives, multiplayer deathmatches, and great graphics, gameplay, and sound.

Goldeneye is based on the James Bond film "Goldeneye" It suprisingly follows the events of the film quite closely and never misses a beat. This is as good as it gets, for now!

Graphics:

As you can see, the graphics in this game are outstanding! The developers at Rare did and excellent job in making everything look incredibly detailed and realistic. In most N64 games, the graphics resemble cartoons like the Mario games. Not so here. While the N64 graphics look familiar in a way, the mood and atmosphere in this game is far different.

First of all, let's talk about the beautifully designed enemies. All of the enemies in the game were programmed with some of the best artificial intelligence that I've ever seen in any game of this type. The enemies suprisingly look like real people and behave like real people. For instance, when you shoot someone in the stomach, the wounded foe will clutch his chest agonizingly as the cloth of his clothing becomes slightly red in color. The game isn't gory at all, it's realistic. How often in real life do you see someone who is shot burst into a million flaming bloody pieces of flesh?

Next, we come to the gorgeous arenas. Most of the levels in the game are actually based on the sets from the movie. Just look at level 2, in the chemical weapons facility. In the movie, Bond walks down the same flight of stairs that you can easily see in the game! The attention to detail is excellent! All of the levels are very interactive. You can shoot computers and cause them to explode into a heaping pile of shrapnel. You can even shoot the wall and leave bullet holes! Unfortunately, the developers may have gone a little too far because you can shoot chairs and tables, causing them to explode! That's not exactly the most realistic thing now is it?

Finally, everything is perfectly polished and done smoothly. Never have I yet to look at a certain item in the game and cringe because of the poor graphics. There is no pop-up, no clipping, and very little slowdown, except when you fire eighty rockets into an elevator and then walk into the billowing cloud of smoke!

Sound:

Once again, Rare succeeds in what it puts itself into. The sound in this game is excellent, for the N64! No way am I saying that you will rush out and buy the cd, but this is some of the best music on the N64 so far, excluding Tetrisphere and some other notables. The music in Goldeneye is done very well. A good deal of the tunes come from the movie soundtrack itself while others are new. While you will find the music repeating quite often, it's not annoying and the tempo and style make you feel as if you are Bond. It succeeds at what it applies itself to.

The sound effects are equally as good. Every gun seems to have its own sound when the bullets come flying out of the barrel. When you hit the heads of your helpless victims, you are treated to the helpless squeal of pain they emmitt that sound so realistic. Footsteps, gunshot, and explosions are all top notch. And I do mean top notch! Sometimes, you will even hear background noises, like sneezes which just add to the atmospher. I found no problems with the sound effects in this game.
